Do you have Workers Compensation Insurance?.

Don’t just ask, “Are you insured”. This is a very broad question –they may reply, “yes” – thinking of their truck or health insurance…. If a contractor gets hurt on your property and does not have Workers Compensation Insurance, you are liable. You may be responsible for all bills resulting from the accident. Could be hundreds, thousands or more. I have worked very hard for everything I own and to have an uninsured contractor take it away would make me very upset. To be sure they have coverage, ask for a certificate of insurance. They can request a copy for you at no charge from their agent.

Do you have General Liability Insurance?

This type of insurance is very inexpensive to your contractor. If they do not have GL – please be smart and keep looking for another contractor. Are you a competent, reliable, experienced contractor with integrity?

Of course, you probably would not ask this question in these words. This is where you will need to ask several questions:

• How long have you been in business?
• Is your company a sole proprietor or a corporation?
• Is this service your main work or a sideline?
• How many employees do you have?
• Do you own, rent or borrow your equipment?
• Are you a member of Better Business Bureau?
• What kind of guarantee do you offer?
• Can you provide a detailed written estimate/proposal?
• Can you provide referrals for your services?
